Police: Man killed in hit-and-run, woman charged
A 22-year-old driver is facing charges of vehicular homicide, DWI and leaving the scene of a fatality after allegedly striking a bicyclist Thursday morning.
Police say Melissa McKiski fatally injured cyclist Charles Velasquez at a busy Carle Place corner on Old County Road just after midnight.
Authorities say McKiski sped off without stopping to render aid.
Police say the driver traveled 2.4 miles from the crash scene to Herricks and Helen roads in Mineola. She was then apprehended by police.
McKiski pleaded not guilty during her arraignment. Her bail was set at $50,000.
As News 12 has reported, both Suffolk District Attorney Tom Spota and Acting Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas want the state Legislature to crack down on hit-and-run drivers who injure people. Singas says the bill they favor would boost maximum jail time to 15 years in prison.
