Road closures, LIRR adjusted ahead of papal visit
The arrival of Pope Francis in New York City on Thursday will mean road closures and schedule changes on the Long Island Rail Road.
The NYPD says to avoid the St. Patrick's Cathedral area on Thursday from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue. The FDR Drive will also be off limits, along with roadways surrounding the Papal Nuncio Residence on 72nd Street.
On Friday, the United Nations area is blocked off from First Avenue to Second Avenue. The 9/11 Memorial area and the roadways surrounding Madison Square Garden and Central Park West will also see closures in the afternoon.
The LIRR is putting on eight extra trains for papal events on Friday, but the railroad advises to purchase tickets for the train in advance. Those eight additional trains include three from Babylon, two from the Port Jefferson branch leaving from Huntington, one Port Jefferson branch train leaving from Hicksville and two leaving from Ronkonkoma.
A full list of road closures and LIRR schedule changes can be found on the MTA website.
