Hometown hero honored for 'Thank A Police Officer Day'
Saturday marked National Thank a Police Officer Day, and the communities of Massapequa and Plainedge came together to show their gratitude for a hometown hero.
NYPD Det. Brian Moore was fatally shot while on the job in Queens back in May.
People gathered on Broadway in Massapequa Saturday to sell special blue bows and wrist bands to honor the day and Moore's service.
All of the money raised will go toward the Brian Moore Statue Fund for a statue that will eventually be placed at Plainedge Park.
Moore's father, Raymond, came down to show his appreciation to the community. "It's really unbelievable," he said. "Brian was shot five months ago today. I miss him every day and everybody knows the relationship I had with Brian, and for the community and my friends and neighbors to miss and love him as much as I do, it's unbelievable."
Moore says a statue of his son at the park would mean a lot to him.
"Children who come down have something to look forward to and say, 'This is a model to grow up to.' It means something to me," he said.
