Deputies serve evictions to mobile home tenants
Nassau County sheriff's deputies visited the mobile home park on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset to serve eviction notices to about two dozen residents today.
A judge ruled in July that the park's owner, STP Associates, could evict the mobile home tenants in order to begin development on a new project.
STP Associates purchased the property in 2007. In 2013, the company gained approval to evict the residents and clear the land for redevelopment. Residents have been battling the move in court ever since.
The company offered residents $5,000 to move out voluntarily by next Saturday. Some took the deal, others, like Theresa Walch, plan to continue fighting.
"I don't feel like the fight's over, because I believe in justice," Walch says.
Fellow resident Bob Dyckman says that he respects the court's decision, even if he regrets it.
"I feel so sad for those who don't have a place to go," Dyckman says.
Residents who received the eviction notices have 90 days to move out.
