Surgeon general calls for steps to promote walking

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has advice for all Americans: Take a walk.

Murthy says not enough Americans are doing enough physical activity.

Doctor Amgad Makaryus, chariman of cardiology at NUMC, says walking and physical activity in general can prevent heart attacks, strokes and increase mental focus. In women, he says it can help decrease the risk of breast cancer.

The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of activity at least once a day throughout the week.

There are some barriers to walking in certain areas on Long Island, like Hempstead Turnpike and Merrick Road. Both roadways were named among the top 10 deadliest roads for pedestrians in Nassau County.

In Suffolk County, Route 25 topped the list.
