Crash injures Suffolk officers, drug suspects
Two police officers and two drug suspects were injured in a chain-reaction crash Tuesday night in Hauppauge.
Police say Orvin Gabriel, of Brentwood, swerved to miss an unoccupied police cruiser in the right lane, but hit another cruiser that was conducting a traffic stop. The cruiser plowed into two officers and a couple that had been pulled over.
Gabriel, 24, does not have a license and was arrested at the scene. His attorney says he should not have been handcuffed because it was an accident. Suffolk police defended their actions, saying that arresting Gabriel was the right thing to do.
"It's an ongoing investigation. You have a crime scene on Route 347 where we have to do a reconstruction of the crash," says Detective Sgt. James Madden.
Samantha Koppen, of Levittown, and Chad Jackowski, of Farmingdale, were seriously hurt and are facing drug charges. Police say they found heroin and other drug paraphernalia in their car.
The two police officers were treated at a hospital and released.
