Brookhaven approves zombie home removals
The end may be near for three zombie homes in the Town of Brookhaven.
Town officials unanimously approved a measure to have the dilapidated homes demolished during a meeting Thursday night.
The three homes in Brookhaven's crosshairs are at 90 Fulton Ave., 118 Overlook Drive and 119 Eleanor Ave.
Brookhaven's assistant town attorney told the town council that all three are in severe disrepair. She said that the buildings were rotting away. At least one home had its roof partially caved in.
Civic Association President John Sicignano said the zombie homes attract crime and devalue surrounding properties.
"Nobody should have to live next to that and pay taxes," Sicignano said.
The measure gives the homeowners 30 days to demolish the zombie homes themselves, or the town will take action.
"Soon thereafter... either the end of September or the first two weeks of October, these houses will be gone," said Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico.
