Church hosts back-to-school backpack giveaway

An event in Wyandanch Sunday helped some families in need get their children ready for the upcoming school year.
Pastor Gayle Brown says her church Bread of Life World Outreach decided to host the event because back-to-school shopping can present a financial burden for many families.
Organizers say more than 1,500 backpacks stuffed with supplies like pencils and folders were gathered to be given away.
The event also offered activities for youngsters. Kids even got the chance to get haircuts and manicures to get ready for school.
Organizers say all the supplies that weren't handed out will go to a supply closet located at the Wyandanch community resource center. Students can go there throughout the school year to pick up any items they might need.
