Critics want the state to reconsider possibly building a large rest area on the eastbound Long Island Expressway between exits 51 and 52.
The area used to be filled with trees. Huntington Town Councilwoman Susan Berland says the state DOT began chopping down the trees without warning.
Berland says the state is clearing space to build a new 9,000-square-foot facility along with 200 parking spaces. According to Berland, the design calls for the rest stop to become something of a welcoming center for the East End.
Several town and county officials have asked the state to halt the work, which has happened at least for the time being.
News 12 Long Island reached out to the state DOT for comment on the work and the overall plan. A spokesperson sent a statement, reading in part, "There is currently no work being conducted at this site. We look forward to future conversations on this matter."
