Hempstead releases new enrollment numbers

Hempstead schools have enrolled 21 new students per day in the last week, the school board announced Thursday.
Since the beginning of July, the district has seen 450 new students enroll.
This year, a special ombudsman, Robert Rodriguez, is overseeing the district's new student enrollment.
Hempstead drew the ire of the state attorney general's office last year as it struggled to enroll 1,500 new students who arrived within months of the start of the school year. Many of them were unaccompanied minors who entered the country illegally.
The district has also hired a new bilingual specialist, and has already screened nearly 500 students to see if they qualify for English as a second language services.
The district currently has 2,500 students who require ESL.
