A controversial project to cut down trees in a Roslyn park is upsetting residents.

The Roslyn Water District has been granted permission to cut down trees in Christopher Morley Park to make room for and install a water filtration system known as air stripping. The stripper system removes volatile chemicals from groundwater and disperses them into the air.

Residents are not happy about the tree removal because they say the pristine woods should be preserved. They also object to the project because they say air strippers release harmful pollutants.

However, the chemicals released by air strippers do not pose a health hazard, according to a report by the state Department of Health.

A parkgoer who spoke with News 12 says the park is one of the few sites in the area that offers camping and nature trails for residents.

In a written statement, Nassau County says that only new trees would be re-planted.
