DEC eyes monitoring whales across area
The Department of Environmental Conservation is looking for bids from contractors to conduct monitoring of whales. 
News 12 Long Island has learned the federal government is looking to conduct a three-year monitoring program for whales in the waters between Long Island and New Jersey. 
Environmentalists say the study would help protect the large whales. 
This summer, Long Islanders spotted Beluga whales in the Long Island Sound and Humpback whales off of the south shore.
