A pilot was killed and a passenger was injured when a small plane crashed on the Long Island Rail Road tracks in Bethpage Sunday morning.
The single-engine plane had taken off from Gabreski Airport and was headed to New Jersey. At some point, the plane reported that it was experiencing difficulties.
It went down shortly before 8 a.m. on the LIRR tracks at a rail crossing, just across from the building that houses the headquarters of mattress retailer Sleepy's.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pilot. However, according to Newsday, the plane was registered to Joseph Milo, of Westhampton Beach. Milo is certified as a single or multi-engine commercial pilot .
The passenger, identified as 55-year-old Carl Giordano, of New Vernon, New Jersey, was taken to NUMC. He suffered a broken jaw and cuts and bruises, according to officials.
A woman who works at the Sleepy's building tells News 12 that her coworker rushed onto the tracks and helped get the survivor out of the plane.
Authorities say the plane damaged some of the railroad infrastructure as it went down, including the arm of the crossing gate.
LIRR service was restored late Sunday, and the MTA said commuters should expect normal rail service on Monday morning. Service had been suspended both ways between Farmingdale and Hicksville.
The NTSB is investigating the crash.
