A Hempstead father has been charged with manslaughter in connection with a crash that killed two people, including his own son.
The crash happened near the Source Mall in Westbury back in September 2013. At the time, police had said the boy's father, who was driving, had some sort of medical emergency behind the wheel. The vehicle hit a tree, killing 27-year-old Martha Hernandez-Majano and her 4-year-old son, Renen Vides Jr.
Authorities now say a man was arrested Friday in connection with the case. Police say they arrested Renen Vides, who had an open warrant, after he was pulled over for driving without a front license plate in Hempstead.
Police say Vides, 29, is being charged with two counts of manslaughter, reckless endangerment and reckless driving for the 2013 incident, plus traffic violations stemming from Friday's traffic stop.
It is unclear at this time what prompted police to charge Vides in the crash.
Vides' next court appearance will held on Monday.
