A clam-eating challenge taking place this weekend in Island Park will benefit South Shore fire departments still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
Pete's Clam Bar, a 75-year-old establishment, will be hosting the event on Sunday.
Island Park Assistant Fire Chief Jim Sarro says the fundraiser comes at a good time. He estimates his department is only about 75 to 80 percent of the way back from Sandy.
"We lost a truck, some ambulances, chief cars, a 2 ½-ton army truck," said Sarro. "Just put your money where your mouth is. Step up, if you got the guts to do it. Eat some clams!"
The firefighters challenge begins at 1 p.m. and then an open public challenge will take place at 2 p.m.
There is a $20 dollar entry fee. Firefighters can enter for free.
