Gunfire erupts in North Amityville
A shootout between two people in North Amityville has community members unnerved.
Police say two people were firing at each other Wednesday night across the street from the Cloverdale Apartments on Great Neck Road. No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made. A minivan in a nearby parking lot was struck by the gunfire.
Just last month, gunfire erupted on two separate occasions on the same block on the same day. One man was shot, and a house was struck as well. Other shootings were also reported in the community in May and June.
Inspector Mathew Lewis, of the 1st Precinct, says 20 police officers, two sergeants and one lieutenant are now being deployed as part of a "hot spot" initiative, which targets the most dangerous areas. He says the unit plans to work hand in hand with the public.
Anyone with information about the shootings are urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
