Southold considers plan to limit tourist stays
An East End town is considering a plan that would place a minimum limit on how long a property could be rented.
The proposed bill would make it illegal for homeowners to rent their home for less than 14 nights in the Town of Southold.
Residents who favor the bill say they are tired of rental "party houses" that cause a nuisance in the community.
Homeowners who rent their homes to tourists to earn extra income say the bill will hurt their bottom line and the overall East End economy.
The issue was discussed at a public hearing tonight at Southold Town Hall.
A vote on the bill is expected by the end of the month.
