Newsday: Contractor paid for Mangano's trips

A Nassau County restaurant owner who has been awarded contracts by the county reportedly paid for luxury vacations for Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

According to Newsday, Bethpage-based restaurant owner Harendra Singh paid for Mangano and his family to vacation in the Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos. He also allegedly paid for a vacation for Oyster Bay Deputy Town Attorney Frederick Mei.

County and state laws do not allow officials to accept pricey gifts from those doing business with government agencies.

Singh's attorney says Mangano and Singh are close friends who vacation together and split costs.

Newsday says it is not clear if Mangano reimbursed Singh for the trips, or if he even went on them.

Mangano's lawyer wouldn't take questions on the story, but said by phone, "The article is incomplete and inaccurate, and conveys a false impression. As always, Mr. Mangano continues to act with the utmost integrity."

The town of Oyster Bay says that Frederick Mei was taking some time off from his job as deputy town attorney.
