Officials: Rust-colored water in Rockville Center safe to drink

The village of Rockville Centre says it is safe to drink the rust-colored water seen coming out of the faucets.
A message was posted on Rockville Centre's Facebook page saying that a water tank is out of service, so water is pumping from wells with a higher concentration of iron. The color became apparent after an older water tower was put in service while a newer tower that filters out the iron is renovated.
Officials say the "water is safe to drink, cook with and bathe in." They also say the iron, which can naturally occur in water, is harmless and poses no health risk.
The village expects the renovated water tower to be up and running within two weeks.
The Nassau County Health Department says that any resident with water concerns should call 516-227-9697.
