Plans to build a 90-unit apartment complex in Copiague are being touted as a way to transform the village's downtown area, but not all residents are pleased with the vision.

Under the proposal, a commercial building near the railroad station would be knocked down and replaced with a two-story apartment complex.

Some residents who spoke with News 12 said they oppose the idea because they feel it would bring more traffic to the area and drive down property values.

But others say the proposal is a step in the right direction. "It would keep young people in our community and give them affordable housing so they can commute back and forth to Manhattan," says Terri Kroll, who is a member of a civic group called the Copiague Coalition.

Business owners along nearby Great Neck Road say they welcome the apartments because they would bring in more patrons. "If you have all these apartments, there's a lot of people that will come to my business," says Marlin Rodriguez, of Venus Beauty Salon.

The proposal still must be approved by village officials.
