Massapequa train station reopens after renovation

After unveiling a revamped Massapequa LIRR station Thursday, the railroad's president asked state legislators for more money for similar upgrades elsewhere.
The two-year renovation cost $20.5 million, according to the LIRR. The station features a new sound system, LED lighting, security cameras and decorations.
LIRR President Pat Nowakowski says Albany lawmakers helped make the station renewal possible with their assistance to the MTA capital budget.
"We need to keep working on our facilities and attracting people to the service we provide," he says. "An important part of it is the investments we are able to make and I thank the members of the Senate and the Assembly particularly for their efforts in trying to get us money to do these types of things."
Nowakowski says there are more stations that need refurbishing, and he is asking legislators to open up their pockets and help fund the work.
The Wantagh and Hicksville stations are scheduled for renovations this fall, but the MTA hasn't yet budgeted improvements for Babylon.
This comes shortly after the MTA revealed that it found about $1 billion in savings and cost cuts.
State Assemblyman Joe Saladino says that money should be reinvested on station improvements.
