Fire damages West Babylon church

A West Babylon church suffered extensive damage as a result of a fire Tuesday night.
Three fire departments battled the blaze at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on Great East Neck Road in West Babylon.
Officials say the fire started around 9:30 p.m., and firefighters managed to bring it under control shortly after 10 p.m.
Father Demtrios Kazakis says the fire started behind the alter and was caused by faulty wiring. He expressed gratitude to the West Babylon Fire Department for saving the structure and to parishioner Athan Vorilas, who arrived on the scene to help.
"He and several others, they ran into the church. They tried to save as much as they can. They saved a lot," Kazakis told News 12.
The church had just installed new iconographies from Greece that were destroyed in the blaze.
No injuries were reported. Investigators will determine what caused the fire.
