A woman died Monday evening after a car crash involving a man who was allegedly fleeing from undercover police officers.
Police say 28-year-old Justin Daley was speeding when he slammed into the back of the 58-year-old woman's car on Hempstead Turnpike near the Home Depot in East Meadow. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet released the victim's name.
Daley broke his leg in the crash and was taken to a hospital.
A News 12 source says just before midnight, Daley was in the parking lot of the Coliseum Motor Inn and sped away when he saw undercover police officers. The source says police followed him and that the crash had already happened by the time they reached him.
Daley's father, Michael, told News 12 that he believes his son did not know the plainclothes cops were police officers. He says his son is a former U.S. Marine and father of a young child.
"If he knew it was the police, he wouldn't have run. He wouldn't have, common sense tells you you're not going to get away," says Michael Daley. "He says he feels terrible that the woman was killed."
Daley was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on manslaughter and reckless endangerment charges.
