Police: Pedestrian hit by drunken driver
A Hempstead man was arrested early Saturday morning after police say he struck and injured a pedestrian while he was drunk behind the wheel.
Prosecutors say Ed Harrison III had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 when he struck the victim at around 1 a.m. The crash happened on Nassau Road at Northern Parkway in Uniondale.
The male victim has not been identified. Officials say he was hospitalized in critical condition.
Police say Harrison was on his way back to Hempstead from Freeport at the time. According to officers at the scene, Harrison was distraught after the crash, but they say he had glassy, bloodshot eyes and his breath smelled of alcohol.
Harrison appeared in court Saturday morning, and his father spoke with News 12 Long Island. He said his son has never been in trouble with the law before, and added that the family is praying for the victim.
Harrison was ordered held on $3,000 bond or $1,500 cash bail. He is due back in court next week.
