Police: Driver on drugs kills stepfather in crash

A nurse is accused of driving high in a crash that killed her 80-year-old stepfather.

Police say Claudette Stephens veered across Route 24 at Long Neck Boulevard and hit another vehicle head-on. John Loetscher was in the back seat of Stephens' vehicle and was killed. Stephens' 16-year-old son and the other driver were also injured.

Stephens is charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs. She was arraigned at her hospital bedside.

Loetscher's family say he was a decorated Navy veteran and a retired LILCO employee.

"He had a good heart, he was a good man," says Rita Resling-Loetscher, the victim's sister.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Southampton Town detectives at 631-702-2230.
