1 dead, 9 hospitalized in Montauk Highway crash

One person died and multiple others were injured in a Brookhaven car crash Tuesday, police say.
Nine passengers were in a minivan heading east on Montauk Highway at around 5 p.m. when a pickup truck heading in the opposite direction crashed into the driver's side of the van, according to Det. Sgt. Bryan McMenemy, of the Suffolk County Police Department.
The van flipped over, McMenemy says, killing one passenger. The injured passengers were sent to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Stony Brook University Medical Center. One of the passengers is listed in critical condition.
Police investigating the crash say the stretch of road where the accident occurred, near Smith Road in Shirley, has been a trouble spot before.
Police say they are questioning the pickup truck driver, who was also hospitalized.
