Hazmat situation prompts evacuation in Amityville
Residents returned to their homes Tuesday evening after hazardous materials prompted evacuations in Amityville.
The incident occurred at the Alpak Soap Company at 175 Dixon Ave., which makes laundry detergent.
According to the Town of Babylon, human error led to a chlorine-based laundry detergent to become volatile and emit a vapor. The mixture was confined to a 1,200-pound tank.
A total of 40 employees were evacuated from businesses in the area and 12 fire departments responded to the building.
Officials say the surrounding neighborhood was evacuated out of an "abundance of caution."
No injuries were reported.
