Monitors installed to determine Brookhaven odor source
Officials say residents along the South Shore of Brookhaven Town might be getting relief from odors that have plagued them for years.
In order to pinpoint the source of the odors, the town is asking the state DEC to approve a plan that will involve the installation of odor monitors in neighborhoods around the Brookhaven landfill, including at the Frank P. Long Intermediate School in Brookhaven.
Depending on the results, steps could be taken to alleviate them.
Town officials say the odors may not be just from the landfill, but a compost facility and sewage treatment plant that are also nearby.
The town hopes to start the monitoring within a few weeks.
