Police: 9 arrested at Suffolk DWI checkpoint
Suffolk police say they made several arrests at a DWI checkpoint Friday to kick off a weekend of heavy enforcement for the Fourth of July holiday.
Officials say nine drivers were arrested at a checkpoint set up on Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station.
Four of the people arrested were charged with driving while intoxicated. They have been identified as 27-year-old Lisa Strickland, of Port Jefferson; 22-year-old John Jakob, of Selden; 21-year-old Ibidapo Kayode, of the Bronx; and 29-year-old David Morgan, of Riverhead.
Two people were charged with driving while ability impaired. They have been identified as 29-year-old Oscar Quiles Jr., of Bellport; and 30-year-old Catherine Frenkel, of Chappaqua, New York.
Two men were charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs. They have been identified as 49-year-old Robert Smith, of Blue Point; and 18-year-old Charles Leo, of Miller Place.
Additionally, police say 30-year-old Arnold Roundtree, of Shirley, was also charged with driving without a required ignition Interlock device, as well as aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.
In Nassau, another 9 arrests were made at a sobriety checkpoint overnight Friday, police say.
Police are warning revelers that they will be out in full force throughout the holiday weekend looking for drunken drivers and boaters.
They say as part of the crackdown, checkpoints will be set up in both Nassau and Suffolk counties through Monday.
