Cops: Knife-wielding man stole SUV, crashed into garage
Police are trying to track down the suspect who carjacked an SUV at knife point, then rammed the stolen vehicle into a backyard garage and fled the scene.
Police say the incident began at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday as a 33-year-old man sat inside his SUV at the corner of Rottkamp Street and Oliver Avenue in Valley Stream. The suspect suddenly entered the passenger's side of the SUV and started fighting with the driver.
Investigators say the two exited the car, and as the argument continued, the suspect moved toward the victim and raised a knife. The suspect was able to get into the SUV and speed away.
About 10 minutes later, the suspect crashed the SUV into a detached garage on a residential property in Floral Park. The vehicle took down two fences on the property and caused damage to the garage.
The suspect then fled the scene. Police describe the suspect as 5 feet 11 inches tall and approximately 40 years old. He weighs about 200 pounds and has an unkempt beard and dreadlocks, police say.
Anyone with information is urged to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
