The Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club convened at Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst Saturday for its annual field day event.
Using an amateur, or ham, radio is not only a hobby for the members, but also a call to action. When landlines fall and cellphones drop calls, amateur radio operators are set up as volunteers.
Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer says that ham radios played an important role during Superstorm Sandy.
"The police and fire rescue personnel were relying on them to help us provide that vital information in that immediate aftermath," he says.
In one case, members of the club say they were able to make contact with someone at the International Space Station.
