Man sentenced to 50 years for killing estranged wife

A man convicted of brutally murdering his estranged wife inside her Hempstead home was sentenced Wednesday to 50 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors say Leonard Reed, 47, violated a protection order and brutally killed 42-year old Diane Parker-Reed in 2013. Reed said his intention was to make peace with his estranged wife, but prosecutors said he shot her eight times and then stabbed her 10 times.

Reed was also convicted of attempting to kill a Hempstead police officer during a standoff and shootout after killing his wife.

The victim's family members said they were upset that the order of protection did nothing to protect her. The family filed a lawsuit against the Village of Hempstead, Nassau County and numerous police officers for failing to arrest Reed for violating the order and attacking his wife.

Efforts to reach Hempstead officials and Nassau police officials regarding the lawsuit were not successful.

Reed will be 97 years old before he's eligible for parole.
