Transgender coalition marches for equal rights

A march was held Sunday afternoon to call for the protection of Long Island's transgender community.
Demonstrators walked from Garden City to the Nassau County Legislature building in Mineola to demand transgender civil rights not only on Long Island, but across the country.
The group called on county legislators and state senators to support bills that would ban discrimination based on gender identity. Organizers say that there are currently no statewide or Nassau County laws in effect that protect transgender individuals.
Earlier this month, the Town of North Hempstead passed a law that protects the rights of transgender people. Suffolk County and New York City have similar laws on the books, while Nassau has not yet followed suit.
