4 nurses arrested in alleged plot to conceal neglect
Four nurses were arrested and arraigned Wednesday for allegedly falsifying records to conceal the neglect of a patient.
According to state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Riadel Manzano, 43, of East Williston, Rodel Placino, 44, of Hewlett, Marrianne Borromeo, 41, of Woodside, and Benetia Johnson, 25, of St. Albans, were working at Woodmere Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in June 2012 when they allegedly failed to properly monitor a disabled patient.
According to court filings, the defendants falsely documented or instructed others to falsely document that the resident had been monitored every 30 minutes for his safety, as ordered by his physician after a series of falls.
According to documents, the resident fell and lacerated his head while he was not being monitored. He was required to be hospitalized and received staples to his scalp. He was hospitalized the following night with respiratory failure and pulmonary edema.
The nurses were charged with falsifying business records. Manzano, the supervisor at the time of the alleged incident, was also charged with offering a false instrument for filing and tampering with physical evidence.
