Long Island's deer population is being spotted in places they have not been seen before.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation says the deer population is growing, and as more land is developed out east, they are moving west to Nassau County. The department says the growing population could be a problem, as deer are a major part of the life-cycle of ticks.

The DEC says that as the deer population grows, officials will have to find a way to handle the problem. Currently, hunting deer is illegal in Nassau County.

DEC biologist Josh Stiller says that if deer do significant damage to a piece of property, the owner can get a permit from DEC to hunt them with a bow and arrow only.

At this time, there are no statistics regarding the deer population on Long Island. The DEC does not track the population since they are not endangered.
