Bird flu causes egg prices to spike

The recent spread of bird flu has caused the price of eggs to spike over the past few weeks.
According to the Department of Agriculture, about 40 million turkeys and chickens - well over 80 percent of which are egg-laying hens - have been affected by the bird flu.
Once farmers detect bird flu, they have to destroy the flock, meaning higher prices will stick around until poultry farms are able to repopulate with healthy birds.
Chicken farmers say they are hoping that as temperatures rise this summer, the virus will weaken and eventually die out.
In the meantime, no human infections from the bird flu have been reported by the Centers for Disease Control.
