Residents oppose proposed solar farm in Holbrook
Big plans for a solar farm in Holbrook are set to be announced Thursday, but some residents who live nearby say they are not happy about the proposition.
Donald Denning lives near the proposed site - a six-acre watershed. Denning and dozens of his neighbors are outraged about the plan because they were only recently made aware.
"I don't think it was done correctly," said resident Carol Paulsen. "We found out through our county legislator, and it was more or less a courtesy on his part."
Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay sent a flier out to residents early last week. On Wednesday, a representative with Sun Edison - the company hoping to lease the land to build the solar farm - met with residents to discuss the project.
The in-the-dark residents made several phone calls inquiring about the solar farm, but they have many questions left unanswered.
"Even town hall, you call there for answers and you just keep getting pulled from one department to another," Denning said.
During last Wednesday's meeting, residents say a Sun Edison representative told them nothing would happen to the land for 30 days. However, this Wednesday morning, they say a bulldozer was spotted knocking down trees without permits, says Denning.
According to residents, Sun Edison's solar farm calls for 7.5-foot panels behind a 125-foot row of trees, which they say provide a noise buffer and shelter for wild animals.
The community is planning to hold a "strategy" meeting next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. They have a petition going around that currently has about 170 signatures in opposition to the solar farm.
Sun Edison declined to comment, but did say that a press release will be issued Thursday.
