Slain detective honored during Memorial Day weekend
The Nassau community of Massapequa was devastated by the murder of NYPD Det. Brian Moore, but many came together Memorial Day weekend to honor his life, along with other fallen heroes.
Hundreds came out to the Towers of Freedom 9/11 Military Monument at John J. Burns Park on Merrick Road to take part in a special service. The ceremony remembered all fallen service members, in addition to those who perished as a result of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Tribute was also paid to Det. Moore, who was shot and killed earlier this month in Queens. Dozens of NYPD officers were in attendance, calling the 25-year-old a hero.
Moore's family was at the ceremony and his father broke down in tears. He placed a flower at the monument site to honor his son.
"We know what he is going through and because he is a hometown kid - it really touched home and brought back a lot of memories," said Daniel Cain, of the Towers of Freedom Military Monument. "It's important to recognize him because he is one of our hometown heroes."
Towers of Freedom Military Monument also serves as a nonprofit organization.
