Bill proposes making private schools more affordable
State legislators are considering a bill that would provide a $500 tax credit to parents who send their kids to parochial schools.
The measure would also make donations to those schools tax-deductable.
Dave Hahn, head of Long Island Lutheran, says the tax credit would help boost enrollment at independent schools and help provide an alternative for parents beyond public schools.
Opponents of the bill say it would siphon money away from public school funding.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been campaigning around the state in favor of the bill.
State legislators are expected to vote on the measure before their session ends in mid-June.
