Car slams into Pizza Hut restaurant in Riverhead

Several people were injured after an SUV plowed into a Pizza Hut in Riverhead Friday afternoon.

It happened at the location on Route 58 in Riverhead, across from Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Witnesses say the SUV came from a nearby intersection and swerved to avoid hitting another car. It then crossed a median and sideswiped a pickup truck before hitting the building.

The manager says there was about a dozen customers inside the restaurant at the time of the incident.

Two customers suffered minor injuries. The female driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

The restaurant is expected to be open Saturday, despite damage to the building.
