Fundraiser held for toddler who nearly drowned

MILLER PLACE - A Suffolk community is coming together to help the family of a little girl get the care that she needs.

Kayla Marianetti, of Port Jefferson, is mentally and physically disabled. Her father Robert says back in September of 2013, his wife made a mistake and stepped away for a minute while Kayla was in the bathtub. The unthinkable happened, and Kayla nearly drowned. She suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Ever since, Robert Marianetti has sought every form of treatment he could find. He's spent more than $300,000 out of pocket for his 3-year-old daughter. He says he's seeing improvement, even when some doctors told him he never would. Kayla recently stood on her own without support for a few seconds, and her swallowing has improved, her father says.

A fundraiser was held today at Napper Tandy's in Miller Place for Kayla as her family faces mounting medical bills.

Robert Marianetti says he's been truly touched by the support he and Kayla have received from the community. Their GoFundMe page has received more than $26,000 in about two months.
