Cosmos appeal to residents for new stadium
Elmont residents held a public hearing Thursday night for a proposal to build a new soccer stadium for the Cosmos in Belmont Park.
The team wants a world-class, 25,000-seat stadium accompanied by a hotel and a retail complex.
More than 200 residents turned out for the meeting. Some opposed the idea, saying the stadium wouldn't create jobs.
Michael Jaime, president of the Elmont Union Free School District, says the proposal would create tax revenue for the district, alleviating some of the burden on local homeowners.
The Cosmos plan is competing against two other proposals, according to Jaime -- one for box stores and the other for affordable housing. The decision is up to Empire State Development.
