An NYPD officer from Massapequa who was shot in the head while on the job in Queens Saturday has died.
Family members made the decision to take 25-year-old Officer Brian Moore off of life support Monday. A sea of officers gathered in support outside of Jamaica Hospital as Moore's body was taken away in an ambulance.
Moore was shot by a suspect at around 6:15 p.m. near 104th Road and 212th Street in Queens Village on Saturday. Police say Moore and his partner were in plainclothes and in an unmarked car when they saw the suspect, Demetrius Blackwell, tug at his waistband as if he had a gun.
Officials say words were exchanged, and Blackwell pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking Moore in the head. Moore's partner was not injured. Blackwell was arrested about 90 minutes after the shooting, following an intense manhunt.
Officials say Blackwell has an extensive arrest record. He served multiple stints in prison, including for an attempted murder conviction from a 2001 holdup.
Police officials say Moore, in his career of less than five years, had proven himself to be an exceptional officer. He made more than 150 arrests and had earned two service medals.
Moore came from a police family. His cousin is an officer, and both his father and uncle are retired NYPD sergeants.
Funeral arrangements for Moore are expected this week.
