Lionel Harvey was arrested Thursday and arraigned Friday morning on rape charges. According to court records, the alleged incident occurred on April 16. It is not clear if the alleged victim is a student at the school.
Prosecutors say two people, including the alleged victim, have orders of protection against him.
Terenna Williams, who is running for school board and has two grandchildren attending the district, says her family never received a phone call from the district about the charges.
"All the residents, parents, should be aware of something this serious," she says.
Uniondale school officials have released the following statement: "On Friday morning, May 1, Mr. Lionel Harvey, a teacher at Uniondale High School, was arraigned on charges of raping a minor. Prior to his arraignment, the district was not aware of the arrest or that the Nassau County District Attorney's Office was going to bring these charges against Mr. Harvey. These are serious allegations and the Uniondale Union Free School District will cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies, including the Nassau County District Attorney's Office and Nassau County police. Mr. Lionel Harvey will not be permitted back on school district property for the duration of the district attorney's investigation and related proceedings. The safety of our students is our first priority, and we will take all appropriate action to ensure that our school district remains a safe and protective environment for our children."
Some students who spoke to News 12 say Harvey was a caring teacher who made a positive impact on them.
Harvey's bail was set at $150,000 bond or $75,000 cash. He is due back in court May 5.
