A total of 21 Latinos from Long Island filed a federal class-action civil rights lawsuit Thursday, alleging that several Suffolk police officers systematically targeted them for race-based traffic stops.

They say they were robbed or given unjustified traffic tickets after the stops.

The lawsuit comes one year after former Suffolk Sgt. Scott Greene was arrested during an undercover sting operation. He was caught on surveillance video allegedly taking money from a Latino driver he had pulled over.

The lawsuit also charges that Suffolk Police Department supervisors allowed the race-based stops to continue for 10 years and that former Sgt. Greene did not act alone.

The plaintiffs say they are taking legal action because people of color should not have to live in fear of being harassed or robbed by Suffolk police officers.
