Ruling: Sandy grant repayments will be case by case

A ruling was made in a Brooklyn court today on whether victims of Superstorm Sandy who received insurance money will have to repay grant money they received from NY Rising.
Federal law prohibits government money from being spent on repairs that are covered by insurance. Storm-struck homeowners who received the NY Rising grants and successfully challenged their claims could be required to pay back the grant money.
Today's ruling says that if a homeowner's NY Rising grant and insurance money equaled the total they suffered in damages, NY Rising will not have to be repaid.
However, homeowners who received more money than they had damages may have to repay some of the grant money, but it will vary case by case.
