Opt-outs expected to soar with math Common Core test

Officials say opt-out numbers are expected to soar after Wednesday's Common Core math tests were administered for students in grades three through eight.

Last week, the group Long Island Opt Out says more than 82,000 students were opted out of the English exams.

Critics say the curriculum and testing is not age- or grade-appropriate.

Supporters argue that the Common Core curriculum encourages critical thinking to get answers rather than just memorizing them.

The state math tests last until Friday.

Given how many students have opted-out, Long Island lawmakers say they expect the state Legislature to discuss changing the standards this session.
