Developer submits Nassau Coliseum master plan

Nassau Coliseum developer Bruce Ratner submitted the conceptual master plan for the proposed sports and entertainment hub, as well as an environmental assessment form, to Hempstead Town Tuesday.

There are also plans for a Sloan-Kettering cancer center on the property.

Ratner says while the plan is to furnish the arena with 13,000 seats, the plan could be expanded at some point in the future.

Nassau Legislator Judy Jacobs believes the new arena should have 17,000 seats in hopes of bringing the Islanders back to the county. County officials have not ruled out the expansion idea.

"I think that the plan certainly provides the opportunity for a professional ice hockey team to play in the facility," said Ed Mangano.

The town board still has to approve a site plan.

The developer is hoping to begin construction in August.
