Cops: Woman hurt in crash while evading officers
Police say a woman who tried to flee a traffic stop was critically injured when she crashed her vehicle Saturday.
Authorities say 22-year-old Alyssa Leppert, of East Northport, was spotted driving erratically in a Chevy Trailblazer in Hauppauge. An officer attempted to pull her over on Kurt Lane, but police say Leppert evaded the officer by driving on the lawns of multiple houses to get onto Route 111.
Police say Leppert continued driving northbound on Route 111, evading police until she lost control of her SUV. She struck a telephone pole and then a tree just south of Route 347.
Leppert was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.
The intersection of Route 111 and Veterans' Highway was closed for several hours Saturday while authorities investigated at the scene.
