Police: Man charged with manslaughter in DWI crash
A Coram man faced a judge today for a January crash that killed one of the passengers in his vehicle and seriously injured another.
Stephan Harbison was arrested Friday and is charged with vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assault and DWI.
Police say the 27-year-old was driving drunk when he slammed into a tree on Straight Path in Deer Park back in January. Prosecutors say Harbison's blood alcohol level was .15 at the time of the crash, nearly twice the legal limit.
Detectives say they were recently able to determine that Harbison was the person behind the wheel in the crash. They say Harbison originally gave first responders a different name at the crash scene, claiming he was "Dominick Snell," of Bay Shore.
The family of Hamzah Abdul-Hakim, the passenger who was killed in the crash, was in court today for Harbison's arraignment. Several relatives wiped away tears.
The other passenger, Ismail Latif, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Latif sustained a traumatic brain injury but has since been released from the hospital.
Harbison's attorney says her client is denying the charges. He is due back in court on April 9.
